Two Charlotte pastry chefs took home awards at last week’s North Carolina Restaurant and Lodging Expo’s Chef Showdown held on Aug. 29 in Raleigh. Pastry Chef Jossie Perlmutter of Block & Grinder was crowned 2016 NCLRA Pastry Chef of the Year and Pastry Sous Chef Noelle Gogg of the Ballantyne Hotel won the People’s Choice Pastry award. Perlmutter also took home awards for Best Use of Got to be NC Ingredient Pastry and Most Creative Presentation Pastry.
Italy Earthquake Fundraising Dinner
Blue Restaurant (206 N. College St.) hosts a fundraising dinner Sept. 23 at 7 p.m. to benefit the victims of the Amatrice, Italy earthquake. Chef Gene Briggs will be joined in the kitchen by Chef Luca Annunziata of Passion8 Bistro to prepare a four course, Italian dinner. Live music, dancing, a silent auction and wine sale are planned with 100 percent of the auction and wine sale and a percentage of dinner proceeds going to the Italian Red Cross. Block & Grinder
Block & Grinder’s newest location at LangTree in Mooresville (130 Landings Dr.) is now serving lunch beginning at 11:30 a.m. On the menu: small plates, burgers, steaks, sandwiches and salads. The location will also begin Sunday brunch service on Sunday. Brunch service will run from 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
September is National Rice Month and P.F. Chang’s (6809-F Phillips Place Ct.) is donating a bowl of rice to those in need for every sushi roll ordered this month during their national Ricegiving campaign. The chain has partnered with USA Rice and Feeding America in an effort to donate 200,000 pounds of rice to food banks, food pantries and meal programs.
Noodles & Company
