The lunch counter at the Third St. Showmars offers a great view of the kitchen. Pictured at the lunch counter are Mitch Ivey, far left, of Charlotte, who comes several times a month. What did he order? The hamburger steak special. There's Whit Cary, sitting in the middle, of Richmond, who works in Charlotte during the week. "I'd come more if I weren't on a diet," says Cary, who ordered the broiled flounder. And there's Carl Brown, sitting on the right, who is a regular and has been coming to this location since he started working Uptown in 1979. He ordered the pork chop dinner special.

Every Tuesday for lunch, Teresa Booker (left) and Jennifer Sheets, who used to work together, would meet for lunch to catch up. On Tuesday, August 2, they met at Showmars on Third Street. "That's our date," laughs Booker, who is regular at this Showmars. She usually orders the hamburger steak dinner. Sheets on the other hand ordered the jr. pita burger.

"The boys like to sit outside on the patio," says Leslie Reeves of Denver. Reeves, who was finishing up lunch with her husband, Troy, and two sons, Garrett (left), 1 1/2, and Cody, 4 1/2, says that they usually come at least once a week to Showmars. This was their second trip to the Showmars in Denver. Before this Showmars opened in January, they used to eat at the Mooresville location. After she gave birth to Garrett, she asked her husband to bring back food for her from the Showmars in Mooresville. WENDY YANG - wyang@charlotteobserver.com
