Ask how many piano students Dzidra Reimanis has taught over the past half-century, and she just laughs. She has no idea. Nor does she have any plans for the 50 or so she instructs now – at 81 years old – to be her last. “To teach is tremendous fun,” Reimanis says. She can even sympathize when a student hasn't practiced: As a girl in her native Latvia, she, too, was lazy. “But in my heart, I loved it.” Music helped sustain her during the four years she and her family spent in a displaced- persons camp after World War II. Now she longs to see legions of young people gain the same affection for “this magnifi- cent form of art.” Many others share her vision. “We piano teachers – we're working like crazy to get there.”
