Junior Allyson Markiewicz knows all about winning under pressure.

After helping Ardrey Kell to an undefeated record, including a N.C. High School Athletic Association 4A championship, Western Regional title and Southwestern 4A title in 2010, with top-10 finishes in all three events, Markiewicz led her team to similar heights this year.

Markiewicz, the Observer player of the year, played her best when it mattered most this season, winning the 4A Western Regional in a sudden-death playoff over eventual state champion, Ronald Reagan's Victoria Allred. The Knights also finished second as a team at the regional.

The Ardrey Kell junior didn't win a state individual title, but she did finish second. She shot an opening-round 75 and final-round 77, finishing three strokes back at Pinehurst No. 6. Ardrey Kell placed third overall.

Markiewicz, who is being recruited by several Division I schools that she won't name, currently is ranked No. 4 by the Tarheel Youth Golf Association.

Coach Dale Snyder also is used to winning championships.

After leading his Salisbury boys' team to a 3A state title in May, Snyder, the Observer coach of the year, did it again with the girls' team this month. The team did it in convincing fashion, winning by 33 shots over second-place Pittsboro Northwood at Southern Pines.

Snyder, who also guided state-title winning teams in 2006 and 2007, will have another strong team back next season with the return of freshman Isabella Rusher, the individual 1A/2A champion who also helped the Hornets to their title.
