Out to lunch

Try Nona's new savory side: Papa's Eats at Nona's Sweets.

We all know and love Nona’s Sweets as a UCity staple of sweets, that is. So, you may be surprised that our favorite stop for sweet treats is adding a savory side to its menu. Papa’s Eats at Nona’s Sweets is their new breakfast and lunch café with seating for 40 in the same space as Nona’s (at the intersection of North Tryon Street and JW Clay Boulevard). Though the University City Magazine staff ate there for lunch, the breakfast menu also looks fantastic with home-cooked favorites like breakfast sandwiches, frittata, specialty pancakes and waffles and more!

Menu best bets:

The Whole Sha-Bang Ciabatta Panini ($9.95): This sandwich hit the spot, with warm, crusty bread, plenty of delicious salami, proscuitto and capicola, and banana peppers to give it a perfect tangy kick. – University City Magazine Editor Cristina Wilson

Classic Turkey Croissant Sandwich ($7.95): The turkey was so juicy and the croissant was just flaky enough to make it a perfect combination. – Editorial Intern Lauren Dunn

The Elvis 2011 Gourmet Sandwich ($8.95): Are you in the mood for something sweet and unusual for lunch? Then The Elvis 2011 is for you! The combination of warm bananas and creamy peanut butter was perfect, and the chocolate covered bacon gave the right amount of saltiness to the sandwich. As a side I picked the side salad with a delicious Italian dressing and fresh croutons which gave me a break from the richness of the sandwich. – Graphic Designer Tracie Stafford

Chef Salad ($7.95, $8.95 with chicken): I had the chef salad – delicious with fresh, homemade dressing, croutons that were the size of my longest finger and lots of ham and turkey. Loved the Italian music, and the staff was friendly and attentive. I’d love to pack a suitcase full of those homemade croutons! – Account Executive Amy Wall

Americano Veggie Gourmet Sandwich ($8.95): I had the Americano Veggie, and it was loaded with fresh vegetables and ranch dressing. The oat-wheat bread was delicious! – Executive Editor Angela Daley

Seasonal Harvest Salad ($7.95): Greens were very fresh and the vinaigrette dressing was light and tasty. The best thing was the pumpkin croutons. They were sweet, delicious and made this salad very unique – a perfect balance. – Account Executive Jane Rodewald

And for dessert: Of course, no stop at Nona’s would be complete without a few sweets to top off the meal. We wanted to sample the cupcake bar, in which you can mix-and-match cake and icing flavors. “The desserts are a must-have,” says Rodewald. “My favorite is the white cupcake and almond icing-perfection.” We also tried a pumpkin whoopie pie (delicious!) and a traditional Italian cannoli.
