A 26-year-old woman and her young daughter were killed Wednesday morning when their car collided with a tractor-trailer on N.C. 150 in Catawba County, authorities said.

The crash was reported shortly before 8 a.m. on a two-lane straightaway, about a mile east of N.C. 16. That is about four miles west of Lake Norman.

The N.C. Highway Patrol said it appears as if a car carrying Tisa Michelle Strickland, and her 1-year-old daughter, Payton Michelle Dellinger, crossed the center line.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, which was carrying concrete barriers, tried to swerve to avoid hitting the car, but they collided. Strickland and her daughter died at the scene, authorities said.

A portion of N.C. 150 just east of N.C. 16 remained closed for several hours while authorities investigated the wreck. It reopened around 2 p.m.

The truck driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to an area hospital.
