Two Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers helped save the life of a man who was injured in an overnight car crash in northwest Charlotte, but another person in the car died.

Police say the two officers were on routine patrol when they came upon the wreck, which happened about 3 a.m. in the 7800 block of Belhaven Boulevard, near Ravenswood Drive.

According to investigators, two people were in a green sedan headed northwest on Belhaven Boulevard, when the car went off the left side of the road, hit an embankment and then crashed into a tree. The car caught on fire a few minutes later.

The two CMPD officers, whose names have not been released, called the Charlotte Fire Department and Medic after arriving at the scene. They then ran to the wreck car and tried to put out the fire with an extinguisher but were not successful. Investigators say the two officers then turned their effort to freeing the two people in the car.

Police say the officers were able to pull the passenger, a 25-year-old man, to safety. But they were not able to save the driver. The driver’s name has not been released.

The passenger was taken to Carolinas Medical Center by Medic, with injuries described as non-life-threatening. The two officers suffered minor injuries and were treated at Presbyterian Hospital.

Police say it appears as if alcohol and speed were factors in the crash.

Police closed Belhaven Boulevard for several hours during the investigation, but the road was reopened about 5:45 a.m.
