Anti-abortion groups get big boost in state budget

Groups that discourage women from getting abortions will receive a big boost in state financial support in the budget the General Assembly approved this week. The money will help them buy ultrasound equipment, and launch a “continuum of care” pilot project in Raleigh.

State retiree health coverage to end for future NC employees

State employees hired beginning 2021 will no longer be eligible for state employee health coverage when they retire. Proponents of the change say the state already has health costs it won’t be able to pay. Employee and retiree groups and Gov. Roy Cooper’s administration say it will be harder for the state to recruit and keep employees in positions that are already hard to fill.
