A new nightspot on Montford Drive is not a dive, like the neighboring bars.
Andrew Blair's opened about six weeks ago in the former Asian Bistro space.
Blair's, named for owner Andy Henson's grandfather, is a restaurant-turned-dance club after 10 p.m. on the weekends.
The Scene: A bouncer at the velvet ropes greets you Friday and Saturday nights. Not on the list? The cover is $5. “We don't have the list to keep people out, we have it to make people feel special,” Henson says.
Once inside, take a seat at the semicircular bar (strikingly similar to the one at Suite).
The dance floor (hidden by a curtain during restaurant hours) can accommodate about 70, but the night I went, no one was taking advantage of the ample boogie space.
A small patio out front was crowded, mostly with people getting a cigarette fix, since the bar-restaurant is smoke-free.
The Music: The music is mellow until about 11:30, when the dance hits start. The sound system could use some improving – a lot of the music sounded tinny and scratchy.
The Crowd: Very few people looked to be over the age of 25 – mostly young men dressed in visors and khaki shorts, and the girls in formal shorts, espadrilles and tank tops.
If you go: The party gets going late. It didn't fill up until around midnight recently.
On the menu: Berry Blair's, a Stoli Razberi-based martini.
