A barbecue and benefit softball game today will serve as opening events in establishing a scholarship fund in memory of a Chesterfield County sheriff's deputy who was killed in a July traffic wreck.
Friends and family members of sheriff's Sgt. Darryl Quick, 42, of Cheraw, have scheduled the event at Arrowhead Park.
Quick was killed July 23 in a head-on collision with another vehicle on U.S. 1 in Chesterfield County. He was off-duty at the time.
The scholarship fund will be available to students who live in Chesterfield and are children of either a law enforcement officer, a Shriner, or a Mason. Quick belonged to the Shriners and Masons.
The barbecue sale begins at 11 a.m., and the softball game – pitting the Chesterfield County Sheriff's Office against a team of players from radio station WCRE-FM and the Link newspaper – is set for 7 p.m. Arrowhead Park is on State Road in Cheraw.
