Grant will aid kids' concerts
A six-figure donation to the Charlotte Symphony will help pay for concerts attended by 25,000 school students a year.
The concerts for fourth- and fifth-graders, supported in part by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, will be called the Debbie Phillips Classical Concerts for Students in honor of the longtime Charlotte Symphony supporter whose family made the donation. The orchestra would not reveal the gift's amount.
“The first symphonic experience for both Debbie and me was elementary school programs performed by our local orchestra in our hometown (of Greenville, S.C.),” said Phillips' husband, former Bank of America executive Pat Phillips. “So, what better way to repay those who provided that for us than to support similar programs in Charlotte.”
Never miss a local story.
