Winthrop honors band: Junior Hayley Buckner and sophomore Scott Ortlip have both been chosen to perform in the 30th Annual Winthrop Invitational Honor Band Festival on Nov. 19-20 at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, S.C. Hayley is a bass clarinet player and Scott plays trombone; both have had previous selections to both the Winthrop Honor Band Festival and the Virginia Tech Honors Band.
Drama: The ACT 1 Drama Team competed recently at the North Carolina Theatre Conference High School Play Festival at Greensboro College. More than 120 shows from 90 schools competed at the regional level, and the top 16 shows performed at the state festival. ACT 1's production of "Into the Woods Jr." won its second state championship and was chosen to advance to the Southeastern Theatre Conference to represent the state of North Carolina. The group also won excellence in set design, and Polly Hilton was named best actress.
NCAIS teacher conference: Fifteen-hundred teachers and administrators from independent schools gathered at Charlotte Latin School on Nov. 5 for the 2010 North Carolina Association of Independent Schools (NCAIS) Biennial Teacher Conference.
Drama: Katrina Ashlin has been cast as Clara, the lead non-professional role in the Charlotte Youth Ballet's production of "The Nutcracker." In addition to Katrina, other CCHS students in the Nutcracker are: Maggie Tomaszewski (10th grade), Avery Faucette (ninth grade) and Katharina Traynor (ninth grade). They will be performing Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. and Dec. 5 at 2:30 p.m. at Halton Theatre on the central campus of Central Piedmont Community College. There is also an abbreviated version of the ballet for schools, Dec. 3 at 9:30 p.m. Parking is free. Make sure you tell the Halton Theatre Box Office that you are associated with Charlotte Catholic High School for either of the performances. Tickets: $12-$25 (special rates for Girls Scouts). Culinary Arts request: Equipment is needed for the Culinary Arts Room 201. All parents should visit the website www.donorschoose.org/donors/proposal.html?id=400333 to provide stools for the Culinary Arts Department at East Meck. Please donate for a very worthy cause at the school.
Financial aid: On Dec. 15, East Meck will present "Financial Aid Night" from 6:30 p.m.-8 p.m., which will provide vital information regarding college financial aid.
Drivers education: South Meck will host two driver education classes after school, beginning Nov. 30-Dec. 15. The rosters for these classes are posted in the Main Office and on the Driver Education Bulletin Board in the mall. Students interested in taking driver education over the winter break may pick up a registration form in the Main Office. The registration form must be returned by Dec. 3.
