Myers Park graduates win scholarships: Bo-Shan Xiang, a senior at Wake Forest University majoring in philosophy, has been awarded the Marshall Scholarship, awarded each year to up to 40 Americans to provide for two years of graduate study at a college or university in the United Kingdom. Xiang plans to study metaethics at the University of St. Andrews. Steven "Paul" Shorkey Jr., a 2007 graduate of Myers Park High School, has been named a 2010 Rhodes Scholar. Shorkey is senior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he has a double major in psychology and business administration. During his senior year at Myers Park High, Shorkey was selected as a Morehead-Cain Scholar. Paul is among 32 American men and women chosen as Rhodes Scholars representing the United States.

Information sessions: Morning coffee and information sessions and tours offer a chance to see East Mecklenburg during a regular school morning, for all students and parents. Sessions are at East Meck Atrium at the front of the school: Thursday, Jan. 6, 8-9 a.m.; Thursday, Jan. 27, 8-9 a.m.
School open house: Monday, Jan. 31, 6:30-8:30 p.m. A general welcoming session in the auditorium will be followed by an opportunity to tour the school.

College representative visit: UNC Charlotte representatives will be visiting Ardrey Kell's Career Center today from 8:15-8:45 a.m. Interested juniors and seniors should come to Student Services to receive a pass no later than first block.
PHS Orchestra Winter Concert: Thursday at 7 p.m.; free admission. PHS Orchestra invites you to its Winter Holiday Concert, which combines a premiere orchestra with great music. Get into the spirit of the season, invite your friends and family: String Orchestra: Christmas Portrait, Festival of Lights and Pat-A-Pan; Chamber: Harp solo and strings, Christmas jazz and Hanukkah medleys.
New headmaster: Glyn Cowlishaw, Ed.D., is the new Head of School for Providence Day. Cowlishaw brings more than 30 years of education experience to Providence Day. Most recently he served as headmaster, teacher and coach at Pinewood Preparatory School in Summerville, S.C. Cowlishaw will begin his tenure at Providence Day on July 1.
