The EpiCentre and Vida Mexican Kitchen y Cantina are celebrating Cinco de Mayo a little early with Chihuahua races in the EpiCentre’s courtyard. It’s free to watch. If your Chihuahua tells you he or she wants to compete, get there at 3 p.m. to register or sign up in advance on the website. The winner will be awarded a trip to Mexico, courtesy of Corona.

To celebrate Fintastic’s anniversary, mermaids Bonnie and Jessica will perform in the store’s 1,200-gallon shark tank. They will stay underwater up to five minutes at a time without any underwater breathing apparatus. This family event includes free food and balloons; the first 1,000 people will get a free betta fish. Shows take place Saturday at 10 a.m., noon, 2, 4, and 6 p.m.; and Sunday at 11 a.m., 1, 3, and 5 p.m.
Free Comic Book Day

Saturday is Free Comic Book Day, when stores across the country will give out free comic books. In addition, many will host special events. Spandex City Comics, 2914-A Mount Holly-Huntersville Road (704-909-7168), will offer Sith training (limited space; registration required) and a visit from Imperial Stormtroopers. Rebel Base Comics, 701-C S. Sharon Amity (704-442-9660), and Heroes Aren’t Hard to Find, 1957 East Seventh Street (704-375-7462), will also offer activities. Call stores for details.

Head to The Charlotte Observer’s front lawn and browse our bookstore. You can meet current and former Charlotte Observer reporters who have published books in the last few years. The authors will sign and personalize any purchases. Great way to score Mother’s Day/Father’s Day/graduation gifts. Food trucks Dan the Pig Man and Sticks and Cones will also be on site selling lunch. In case of rain, event moves to Observer lobby.
