Last weekend, fashion maven and NYC socialite Olivia Palermo got married to her long time boyfriend, Johannes Huebl. Palermo’s fashion followers were, of course, eager to see what she would wear for such a big occasion and she didn’t disappoint. While she stayed traditional with white, she opted for separates for a modern twist. Her look, by Carolina Herrera, consisted of 3 pieces: a cashmere sweater with ostrich feather accents, white shorts (yes, shorts!) and a full tulle skirt. Although wedding day separates have been trending for awhile, not many brides choose to go with this modern take. I personally love Palermo’s look. It somehow manages to make a statement while also being understated. She’s wearing minimal jewelry and her hair is simple and elegant. We also can’t forget to mention her royal blue Manolo Blahniks – pure perfection.
While separates might not be for every bride, there are a few keys to follow if you do decided to go this route. The number one thing is to choose separates in luxurious fabrics. Palermo’s look wouldn’t work as well without her gorgeous cashmere sweater and detailed tulle skirt. Beautiful fabrics help elevate the overall look. The second tip that I have is to keep some elements simple. Palermo kept her hair and jewelry very understated. The tulle skirt is the focal point and then the blue shoes add an extra pop of color.
J. Crew, BHLDN and Kate Spade are great places to find wedding worthy skirts. Department stores and vintage shops can also be great places to look for separates. Do you like the separate trend but aren’t totally sold? Try throwing a pretty cardigan over your gown and get the best of both worlds!
What do you think about Palermo’s look?
