Men's soccer opens 2014 with 1-0 win over Wofford
For the fifth straight season, Winthrop men’s soccer opened with a win after holding off Wofford College 1-0 Friday afternoon in the opening game of the Big South/SoCON Challenge at Gardner-Webb University.
The victory is the fourth straight over Wofford as the Eagles improve to 23-7-2 all-time in the series. All four of the wins have been by a goal.
Winthrop will be back in action at 1 p.m. Sunday when it faces Georgia Southern on the final day of the Big South/SoCON Challenge.

Volleyball team splits 2 matches at Falcon Classic
The Winthrop volleyball team opened its 2014 campaign at the Falcon Classic Friday, downing the Rutgers Scarlet Knights 3-0 before falling 3-0 to the host Air Force Falcons.
Winthrop (1-1) fell behind early to the Scarlet Knights in the opening set 7-4, but battled back with an 11-3 run to grab a 15-10 advantage. Winthrop continued to lead at 20-14 and after a Rutgers timeout, the Scarlet Knights went on a 7-1 run to tie the set at 21-21. After the teams traded four points, Winthrop faced set point at 24-23. A kill from Brianna Gray tied the set at 24-24 before two errors by Rutgers gave the Eagles a 26-24 opening-set victory.
Freshmen dominate cross country performances at Covered Bridge Open
Winthrop men's and women's cross country coach Ben Paxton had high expectations for his freshmen class and he wasn't disappointed on Friday at the season-opening Covered Bridge Open at Appalachian State.
In the women's 5K run, the first six Winthrop finishers freshmen while on the men's side the first five finishers in the 8K for the Eagles were newcomers. The Winthrop women finished sixth out of 11 schools while the men were ninth in a field that included three ACC schools along with East Carolina, Temple and host Appalachian State.
