Marty, 34, thought Jason, 25, was too young when they first met in 2004.
The patient: I was a single mom working for my dad doing construction work. I knew I needed a change, so I became an emergency medical technician. On one of my first calls, I rode with Jason and his EMS partner. While transporting the patient to the hospital, she asked if Jason and I were married. We laughed and said no.
The younger man: Jason was cute, but I'm 10 years older and was involved with someone at the time. Two years later, I had broken up with my boyfriend and was starting paramedic school. Jason was in school, too. When he found out I was single, he asked me out. I told him no. I didn't want to date anyone I worked with. Plus I was too busy working full time and going to school.
The blast: Jason was persistent and kept asking me out. After a few months, when school was coming to an end and I was lonely, I finally told him yes. But I didn't want anyone at work to know, and we were just going out as friends. We went to dinner and a movie and had a blast. It was just what I needed.
The cruise: We've been together every day since. Jason is a wonderful person, and the difference in age is funny: I was going to Bon Jovi concerts when he was 5 years old. We celebrated the one-year anniversary of our first date with a Caribbean cruise. The night before we left, Jason asked me to marry him. The wedding was Aug. 8.
