Jack and I dated long distance from the beginning, so our visits were very scheduled and planned out. I had just gotten back from a visit to California (where he lived), and got home from work and was getting ready to go to dinner with friends. I was wiped out from work that day and a little grumpy. My roommate and I were going to ride together to dinner, and she kept asking me lots of questions, like “Are you going to shower?” and “Now, what time are you wanting to leave?” and that isn’t like her at all. I thought it was strange, but didn’t think anything about it particularly. I mustered up the energy to pull myself together a bit for dinner, and while waiting on her to be ready there was a knock at our front door. No one ever knocks on that door, so I thought it was probably a door-to-door salesmen or something like that, so I just said, “I’m not going to get it, I don’t have the energy to deal with that right now.” My roommate said, “I can’t get the door right now, do you mind dealing with it?” So, I started to walk toward the door, and I saw a camera peeking out from behind a tree in our front yard, and my heart fluttered for a half a second. I opened the door, and there was Jack! I had just returned from a trip there, so I did not expect this at all. I was ever more confused because my family was also in the front yard. Before I could even understand and grasp that he’d flown out to see me, Jack was down on one knee asking me to marry him! I fell to my knees and just kept saying, “What is happening?!” Finally, after prompting me a couple of more times, I said “Of course!” It was amazing and sweet, and then we got four unexpected days to spend with each other, dreaming and planning for the wedding.
