Your wedding is just the beginning of the rest of your life with your new spouse. Weddings can be expensive—the ceremony, the dress, the reception, the live music—so secure your investment in love with pre-wedding marriage counseling. Charles Wimmer, an expert counselor for engaged couples in the greater Charlotte area, shares his expertise. Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself, 2 Becoming 1 Global, and your personal experience in marriage coaching.
A: “My wife, Buffy, and I have been married for 38 years now, this month. In fact, we’re going to Arizona in March for a six-day biking trip together. I can’t wait. Even though I loved her when we got married, I look at her now and love her even more than I ever have Young couples want mature mentors. They need someone to believe in when they have a crisis—that’s where we come in.”
Q: What does the coaching process entail?
A: “The primary goal of the life coaching is to show engaged couples what their compatibility and incompatibility is all about. The ideal end result is that each couple will learn something great about their communication skills with each other. We recommend that engaged couples begin the coaching process at least 90 days prior to their wedding date, although six to nine months out is ideal. The couple takes an online, real time personality assessment called Engage-Enrich, which assesses each of them on 12 areas of personality. Then, the couple meets with me several times for ‘coffee shop counseling,’ and we talk strategies for improving communication pre-, during, and post-wedding. Then, when the honeymoon is over, my advice is to meat least twice a year, so that they would find a couple’s enrichment retreat, a seminar, or a small group to be a part of.”
“Couples’ Weekends offer a nice retreat-style marriage enrichment experience. These are usually on Fridays and Saturdays at local churches and venues.” -Charles Wimmer
