What: Handcrafted women’s (and occasionally men’s) necklaces and bracelets created from natural elements such as antler, shells, sea glass, freshwater pearls and a variety of beads, strung or knotted.
Who: Carola Swimmer was born and raised in Frankfurt, Germany. She moved to Charlotte in 1981 and pursued her passion for fabric, texture and design by studying interior design at CPCC. In 1987, she and a friend opened a fashion studio, Viccaro, which morphed into Silver::Bone Jewelry Design. Now that her two sons are grown, she says, she enjoys the “active meditation” of creating jewelry. “Each piece tells its own story, from whimsy to elegant. I love to combine materials that are unexpected, yet play off each other.”
On the name: It “simply stems from being a dog lover. It reminds me and my customers that even everyday errands deserve a little dose of fun, panache and style.”
On motivation: “What really gets me excited about my business is that my jewelry celebrates femininity and self-expression.”
Favorite piece: Swimmer says she cannot choose just one – and that her family laughs each time she’s working on her latest piece and says, “This one is my favorite!”
