CLT Made: Created Beautifully
What: Initially just jewelry, this product line by Jennifer and Jared Cashel has grown to include leather clutches and cross-body bags made with Pendleton wool and shibori fabric hand-dyed by N.C. artist Anna Nickles. Prices range from $38 to $150.
Who: The Cashels, who are married, tackle the business together. She works at it full-time; they joke that it’s a part-time job he goes to at night, when he handles graphic design and other duties.
How: “After having been in merchandising for a decade and putting my husband through nursing school, I had the chance to pursue my childhood dream of designing and making beautiful accessories,” says Jennifer, whose mother taught her how to sew as a child. When she began dabbling in jewelry and accessories, the response she got whet her appetite, she says. She expanded from handmade bird’s nest jewelry, adding stone jewelry and leather, hide and fabric clutches.
Sole interest: “I am really particular about the leather I use, both in quality and sources. It is either upcycled, salvaged from designer pieces, or ethically sourced.” The bags are all fully lined, and even interlined when needed. She aims to provide a piece that can be carried for years to come.
Favorite piece: “I’d have a tough time picking a favorite, (but) at this time I love working with Pendleton wool – it just has such a nice hand (feel) and warmth to it.” Her best-seller these days? Cowhide clutches.
