People often think of summer as that glorious season that most reminds them of youth and frivolity. But who can focus when it's so darn hot and you're wearing jeans because you haven't got the proper tan or you just don't like your thighs?
It is the cooler climes of fall that present the best fashion times to revisit our youth (in a grown-up way) without regretting it later in family photos.
Almost everyone can feel at ease showing some leg while dressed in a pair of fall-friendly tights. And you gotta love those control tops and the wonderful patterns, better known as camouflage.
Proportion is key. If the pattern is really wild and you're a kid, go for it. If you're an adult, add tall boots and a knee-length skirt to reduce the loudness factor.
Never miss a local story.
Invest in some peep-toed boots, booties or heels and wear them with everything.
If height (or rather the lack of it) is an issue, accentuate your legs by drawing attention to them with solid-colored tights or tights with subtle vertical lines and high heels that don't have straps to cut you off at the ankle. You can also probably get away with wearing a shorter skirt than you normally do, which will make your legs look even longer. But be careful that the skirt hits an inch or so below the widest part of your thighs so that your legs look slimmer, too.
If height is not an issue, go with a sophisticated pattern but not one that's matchy-matchy. Go for tights with texture and patterns that are prominent, such as big, bold polka dots, plaids or cable-knit. And don't forget to be careful of proportion. If your legs are screaming, “look at me,” with some killer tights, tone down the rest of your outfit or you'll look you're trying too hard or perhaps didn't try hard enough.
