When applying a bold lip color (like red, cranberry, brown or bright pink), first apply a waxy lip balm. Then, pencil in your entire lips with a color that matches your natural lip shade before applying color. Pick: Cult of Cherry lipstick line from M.A.C ($14 each, www.maccosmetics.com).
Choose your lip color based on your skin tone: Fair skin — choose blue-based pinks and wines; Olive skin — go for warm pinks or browns; Dark skin — try bright pinks or oranges.

Those with thin lips should avoid deep or bright shades. Period.
Choose rich and shimmery eye shadows for fall. Smoky eyes are also a classic look. Dab the inner corners of your smoky look with a dab of lighter shadow to brighten the look. Pick: Bare Escentuals Smoky Eye tutorial kit ($32, www.bareescentuals.com).
Vibrant eyeliner can be done — top lash line only, please — but again consider your skin tone: Pale and medium skin — pick turquoise or lime; Dark skin — choose maroon or purple. Pick: Technakohl Liner ($14.50 each) or Liquidlast Liner ($16.50 each), both from M.A.C.
