Southern Biscuit Flour is looking for original biscuit recipes for the fourth annual Southern Biscuit Day Bake-Off on June 5. Three finalists will be invited to bring their biscuits to Newton, about 40 miles northwest of Charlotte, to compete for the $250 grand prize. Recipes must use at least 2 cups of Southern Biscuit self-rising or all-purpose flour or Formula L biscuit mix and will be judged on flavor, appearance and creativity. Deadline: May 23. Learn to make macarons

The airy French sandwich cookies called macarons are the subject of a Cocoa Lab class at the Ritz-Carlton at Trade and College streets on May 31. The 9 a.m.-noon class will cover chocolate, red velvet, vanilla and Nutella macarons. The class is $75 and registration is required.
