Besides collecting great recipes and great books, I collect great laughs. And Nancie McDermott, the nationally known cookbook author who lives in Chapel Hill, has one of the great laughs. Whenever a group of Southern culinary folks get together, you can always tell Nancie is there when you hear her laughing.
Her books are that kind of fun, too. In works like “Southern Cakes,” “Southern Pies,” and her latest, “Southern Soups & Stews,” she gets right to the heart of her subjects with great recipes that always teach me something I didn’t know. And no, she’s not just a Southern author: She’s traveled all over Southeast Asia, and her book collection includes “Real Thai,” “Real Vegetarian Thai” and “Quick & Easy Vietnamese.” So yeah, McDermott is always up to something interesting.
You can meet her for yourself tonight at Park Road Books, 4139 Park Road. She’ll sign her new book from 7 to 8:30 p.m. It’s a great book, and you can knock several people off your gift list with this one.
I bet if you bring along an old book, she’ll sign that, too. And if you tell her a joke . . . well, you’ll see what I mean. Funny lady.
