Q. What made you decide to become a relationship therapist?
A. I decided to become a relationship specialist because I am passionate about helping people have better relationships. Our relationships are the most important part of our lives and so many people are unhappy with them and do not know how to improve the situation, or even believe it is possible to have a happy, loving relationship.
Through my work with clients over the years, countless hours of study, and my own personal journey, I have learned what it takes to have a loving, satisfying long - term relationship. I want to help others do the same.
Q. What have you realized over the past 25 years of being a therapist- the differences in your approach?
A. I have learned over the years that the most important thing I can help clients do, no matter what the issue, is to change their thoughts and beliefs in order to change their lives. This is a fundamental step in moving forward.
I have also changed my way of working with couples.
I do not find that traditional marriage counseling is very affective in bringing about lasting change. I work instead with clients individually to bring about change in their relationships.
I have found that it only takes one person participating in counseling with me to improve the relationship. This is very beneficial as frequently only one partner is willing to attend sessions anyway. It is great if both will agree to see me, but not necessary.
Q. What made you decide to create the Are You Ready to Create an Unstoppable Relationship workshop?
A. I created the Unstoppable Relationship workshop to reach more people than I can in individual counseling.
This workshop is designed for couples in the beginning stages of a relationship who want to give it the best start possible, couples who are struggling to find happiness in their relationships and couples who would like to enrich their relationship.
This workshop allows me to cover a great deal of material in a short time to give them some insight into their relationship, along with practical tools and techniques they can use right away.
I believe that most people would like to have better relationships but just do not have the knowledge they need to do so. I want to give that to them.
Q. Who should attend?
A. Anyone in a relationship can attend.
Those wanting to just learn more to avoid problems, those wanting to get back some of the closeness and passion they once had, those wanting to understand their partner more and increase their communication skills and those wanting to decide if the relationship can be saved.
I also think it is a good idea for singles who want to understand relationships better before they start their next one.
Q. What do you hope individuals can take from the workshop?
A. I hope individuals will leave the workshop with a new perspective on relationships, a better understanding of the differences between men and women and what they want and need in a relationship, as well as how to be the best partner you can be in order to bring out the best in your partner, and how to have better communication skills and ways to increase the love and passion in your relationship.
Q. When is your next workshop? How can our readers sign up?
A. My next workshop will be March 21.
My workshop schedule is posted on my website and kept up to date. You can also email me and I will put you on a list and notify you with specifics for the next workshop.
I plan to do them on a regular basis and will be holding them at local churches as well. You can sign up on my website.
Q. What other workshops do you hold?
A. I also hold workshops and counseling for singles on how to attract and keep your ideal mate.
I have learned the secrets to attracting the right partner. I have learned the mistakes most singles make and how to correct those.
I also work with individuals who are going through or have been through a divorce. I do workshops also for divorce recovery.
Q. What is the most important thing men and women should know about one another?
A. The most important thing men and women should know about one another is that we have different needs in a relationship.
The primary need for men is unconditional respect and for women it is unconditional love.
When we understand this, we are able to give our partner what they most need from us. This sets the whole tone for the rest of our interactions with our partner.
Q. When you offer private counseling, what is your main approach?
A. My goal in counseling is to help empower individuals and couples so that they can live richer, fuller, happier lives. I create an individual plan for each client. I will motivate, inspire, teach, and coach them every step of the way.
Q. Do you use any special techniques?
A. I teach the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), and use this to work with clients on stress management and to help those going through difficult stages in life.
Q. How are you able to help couples?
A. I am able to help couples understand each other so they can be the best partner they can be.
This in turn brings out the best in the other person. I help couples become a team and learn to work together and to put their relationship first.
I teach them how to communicate in a positive way. I also teach them how to keep or bring back the closeness and passion in their relationship.
Q. What is the #1 mistake you see couples making?
A. The number one mistake I see couples make is that they expect their partner to think and act like them!
Men and women are very different and we need to understand these differences to avoid the power struggles that deteriorate our relationships. Couples forget they are a team.
Q. What are your rates?
A. Workshop rates vary and are posted on the website. My individual counseling rate is $65 an hour.
Lori Ann can is also a regular on the Profit and Growth Hour on t103.3 FM every Tuesday morning starting at 10am, where she gives relationship advice. The show can be live streamed at www.drbizness.com.
