Parents of 3- and 4-year-olds can get their children screened for free prekindergarten programs in 2009-10.
Mecklenburg County children who will turn 4 by Aug. 31 may be eligible for Bright Beginnings or More at Four.
Bright Beginnings, created by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and located in some elementary schools and prekindergarten centers, is available to children who lack skills they need to be ready for kindergarten.
Eligibility for More at Four, a state program, is based on family income and the child's health and developmental needs; children of active-duty military families are also eligible. Those classes are at child-care centers.
CMS will host several screenings around the county before the May 26 deadline:
March 5, 5-8 p.m., Greenway Park Elementary, 8301 Monroe Road.
March 12, 5-8 p.m., Starmount Prekindergarten Center, 1600 Brookdale Ave.
March 26, 5-8 p.m., Double Oaks Prekindergarten Center, 1326 Woodward Ave.
Families can also schedule screenings at the Family Application Center, 700 Marsh Road.
Parents should bring their child to the screening. They'll need the child's original birth certificate, immunization record and current health assessment, alone with three documents to show proof of residency.
Call 980-343-5950 to make an appointment at any of the locations or for more details about screenings.
