Mecklenburg County children who will turn 4 by Aug. 31 may be eligible for free prekindergarten in 2010.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is starting to screen the little ones to see if they're eligible for Bright Beginnings or More at Four.
Bright Beginnings, created by CMS, is designed for children who lack skills they'll need for kindergarten. They attend public elementary schools or prekindergarten centers.
Never miss a local story.
Eligibility for More at Four, a statewide program, is based on low family income and other risk factors. They attend approved child-care centers.
CMS staff is taking appointments now to help families find out whether their kids qualify. Call the Family Application Center, 980-343-5950 (for Spanish, 980-343-5138) to make an appointment.
Current appointments will be during weekday business hours at the Family Application Center, 700 March Road. Starting in January, CMS will also offer Saturday screenings and appointments in locations around the county. Screening must by done by May 31.
