Preschool Theme Parties (1-5 yrs): Preschoolers will enjoy ocean party games, activities, crafts, snacks, and more, 10 a.m. at Ray’s Splash Planet. You must pre-register. $6 per child. Don't forget to bring your bathing suit and towel because classes include an all day pass to Ray's Splash Planet for you and your toddler on class days.
Family Fun Fridays to Benefit Birthday Blessings: From 4:30-8:30 p.m., Charlotte-area Monkey Joe's (Matthews, Pineville, University, Lake Norman) will give 20 percent of the day's proceeds to Birthday Blessings, a nonprofit organization that celebrates the lives of homeless children. Admission will be discounted to $5 and there will be giveaways. Birthday Blessings will accept birthday presents, gift cards and party and goody bag supplies to benefit children living in nine area shelters and homeless CMS students.
Our backyard friend: Gray Squirrels: It's that time of the year that the gray squirrels are having their first litters. Discover what makes these mammals so special in this exciting presentation, 4-5 p.m. at Reedy Creek Nature Center.
Chinese New Year Festival: This fun festival will include ceremonial lion and dragon dancing, exciting demonstrations and performances of Chinese martial arts and health arts including kung fu, tai chi, acupuncture, yoga and Asian dance. In addition, a children’s carnival with fun and exciting games for kids is scheduled, along with ongoing raffle drawings for assorted prizes. 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at The Peaceful Dragon. $3 per family (Free if you bring a non-perishable food item to donate to Loaves & Fishes)
Back of the Big House: Learn about life for those enslaved on a 19th century North Carolina cotton plantation, 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. at Historic Latta Plantation. Local interpreters will introduce you to Suky, Peter and the others who lived at Latta through first person interpretation and living history. $6 for adults, $5 for seniors and students, ages 5 and under free.
Garden Discovery: Find out about special features a garden has that helps you get close to nature through hands-on activies, 2-3 p.m. at Latta Plantation Nature Center. $3 per child for ages 6-12.
Free Craft for Kids: Bring your child, age 3 and older, to any Lakeshore Learning center to create free crafts 11 a.m.- 3 p.m. every Sunday. This week’s craft will be creating a “Be My Valentine Magnetic Note Holder.”
Woody Sez: The words, music and spirit of Woody Guthrie: Woody Sez is a toe-tapping and moving theatrical concert event that uses Woody's words and over twenty-five of Woody's songs to transport the audience through the fascinating, beautiful and sometimes tragic life of Woody Guthrie. Performed by a talented group of four versatile actor/musicians who not only play 15 instruments ranging from guitar and fiddle to jaw harp and dulcimer, but they also bring to life the many people who are the fabric of Woody Guthrie's amazing story. Prices begin at $19.50. 3 p.m. at Booth Playhouse. Other show times throughout the month.
