June 3, 2010
Last year, we were simply trying to get through June 12. That date was the milestone…
This year, it seems we’ve encountered many landmark moments along the road to the second anniversary. Senior pictures, football games, SAT’s, college visits, senior presentation, golf season, prom, cap, gown and announcements, senior cut day, college letters, senior banquet, senior prank (NOT), last days of classes and ‘final’ final exams…
I’m not sure if it is because we no longer have the self-preserving shield of shock and denial to insulate us from the painful truth, or if the reality of missed 'moments' from Brian’s senior year of high school has made things harder to ignore.
We discovered several months ago the very day he would have graduated from Butler High School is exactly two years after the day of his accident…June 12, 2010.
Our grief over what we are missing doesn’t lessen our joy for Brian’s friends, their families, our friends and their children as they celebrate this important occasion… However, we are realistic about our limitations; the last thing we want to do is bring a cloud upon the best day of their lives.
For this reason, we have begged forgiveness for our weakness of not being able to be physically present for their rite of passage. It is not indicative of our love for each of them, or the significance of their accomplishment, but rather the struggles of our broken hearts.
Congratulations to all the graduates of the Class of 2010… I’m sure Brian will be watching from the fine edge of a cloud, smiling his trademark smile, shouting “We good, B” as you march along, wishing, as we do, he was there with you to celebrate too…
We are giving away ‘Remember Brian 06-12-08’ bracelets again for the second anniversary. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org if you are interested with your mailing address & I will gladly send one (or more) to you! Also if you are in need of a replacement, I have plenty to share!
Wishing you many blessings and hope…tg
