If you’ve toyed with the idea of writing a book for children, here’s some impetus: Cheerios – as in the General Mills breakfast cereal – is sponsoring its annual New Author Contest. It’s “seeking the next great children’s book author, and encourages ambitious authors nationwide to submit an original story, in either English or Spanish, for children ages 3 to 8.”
The winner will be $5,000 richer and may land a publishing contract with Simon & Schuster. Also, the new author will have his/her book promoted inside Cheerios boxes in 2012. For guidelines and entry information, go to spoonfulsofstoriescontest.com; deadline is July 15.
Last year’s winner was Laurie Isop of Renton, Wash., whose “How Do You Hug a Porcupine?” is scheduled for release July 26 (Simon & Schuster, $15.99, 32 pages). Meanwhile, it will be featured inside 3 million boxes of Cheerios.
