3 back-to-basics tools for your business

This week’s “Ask the Mompreneur” features an interview with Gaye Esser, a life and business coach for moms and the founder of Redefine Balance.

Ask the Mompreneur

I’m a big believer in the power of fundamentals, versus anything fancy.  I often see business owners get sucked into the latest trends or technologies and just generally making things too complicated.  What advice do you have for a back-to-basics approach to building a business?

Gaye Esser

Entrepreneurs might think the answer to business success is somewhere out there, but actually, their most important toolkit lies within.  Even as we hear about new techniques and buzzwords, we need to remember that the foundation for our companies is made up simply of our gifts, our lessons, and our goals.

Connecting your unique gifts to your business

When you connect your unique talents to your business, you can really set yourself apart.  When running your own business, are you embracing the skills you already have?  It is important to take into consideration how your unique knowledge and expertise can be applied most effectively to your business.

Your life is different than anyone else’s and you have a wealth of information at your fingertips that can be directly applied to your business.  Think back through your life to all of the different experiences you have had.  What did you learn from past jobs?  What skills did you pick-up?  What do you love to do?  What comes easy to you?

Now think about how those skills will help your business.  What you already know sets you apart so don’t be afraid to use that information or those skills!  Do you love to write?  How can you get in front of your target customers through writing?  Are you great at networking?  How can you turn those relationships into partnerships that will help build your business?  It is important to think about everything you know and all of your special skills to see how you can use them in your business.

Turning past missteps into future success

Past mistakes can be great learning opportunities for you and your business. When running your own business, you can probably think back to a time when things did not work out the way you planned.  Whether it was a missed opportunity, the contract you shouldn't have signed or the presentation you blew, each and every one of us has a similar story.  How can you move on from past mistakes and turn that knowledge into future success?

What will set you apart in your business is when you change any mistake into a learning opportunity. Stop beating yourself up and instead evaluate the situation.  What did you learn from the experience?  Where can you create new guidelines so that same situation does not keep happening?  What procedures will you do differently next time to prevent the same mistake?  Using missteps, as growth opportunities will exponentially improve your business.

You have to start somewhere and kudos to you for rising to the challenge to begin with.  New techniques are created by figuring out where your old systems have failed and by implementing changes.

Creating and visioning for future growth

Goal setting can help you outline future growth for your business.  When you have clear goals you want to accomplish, it makes it easier to know what you need to work on each day.

Spend some time visioning about your ideal business.  What does your ideal business look like?  What goals do you have?

When creating specific goals, it helps to ask a question and put quantitative measures in place.  So instead of saying, “I want to get new clients,” say, “How can I get 10 new clients this month?”  These answers become your goals.

Here is the goal setting map I use with my clients at Redefine Balance.

By understanding yourself, learning from your mistakes and by setting clear goals, you will be well on your way to creating more success in your business!  Enjoy the journey!
