The winner: Cat scratchboards are not cheap. My 19-pound cat, Franky, has two of them. But he only uses the ends, not the middle. So after shredding the ends, I cut the scratchboards in half, reverse the pieces, and glue them back together. Presto! New ends for the busy kitty.

Old hose makes a great cable protector

Everyone has wires coming into their house. They could be cable, Internet or phone. I took an old piece of garden hose that was going to be thrown away, cut it down the side, wrapped around the cables and taped. It protects the wires near the ground while you do weed trimming around the house and other work. After you get it attached it can be painted to blend in. Jim Gallagher, Concord
