Wake the Lake Promises Big Thrills

Wakeboarders will be flying through the air and performing dazzling tricks during the annual Wake the Lake competition this month at Vinnie's Sardine in Mooresville. IcyWakes Surf Shop in Cornelius is hosting the family-friendly event for the seventh year, and it continues to grow, with more than 60 riders expected to compete this year. Sisters Shannon Smith and Jammi Allen co-own IcyWakes Surf Shop, and together they have helped turn Wake the Lake into a unique and popular community happening, with food and drink vendors, DJs, giveaways and activities and games for the kids. But of course the main attraction is wakeboarders, who will compete for the top three spots in multiple divisions based on age and skill level. And even if you don’t know a “whirlybird” from a “toeside backroll,” you’re sure to be impressed by the skill and athletic ability of the competitors. . Wesport Marina in Denver first started Wake the Lake in 2002, and the following year Charlotte-based SouthTown Watersports took over as the main sponsor and host. Danny Tolentino, owner SouthTown Watersports, says he turned over the reigns of the event in 2005 to the sisters at IcyWakes Surf Shop, who in addition to selling everything from wakeboards, clothing, footwear and accessories, also offer wakeboard camps and lessons. “We make this a fun family day out and not just a competition,” says Smith. “This event is a great way for people to meet others who share their love for boardsports and Lake Norman.”
