Your prescription for a hard day at the office can now be filled on Main Street in Mooresville. Retired pharmacist Tom Burgiss recently opened Thistle Meadow Wines, offering grape-fermented remedies to soothe whatever ails you or celebrate whatever occasion is calling. His shop carries the wines he produces and bottles, handcrafted in small batches, at his Thistle Meadow Winery in Laurel Springs, just off the Blue Ridge Parkway. The shop offers tastings, pairings and even sells DIY kits for those adventurous souls who want to make their own spirits. Tastings are offered all day, with 64 red, white and blush wines to choose from. For $5 or $7, you can select and taste five different wines alongside fresh Ashe County cheese. And keep the etched Thistle Meadow Wines glass—it can be used to enjoy $3 tastings on your next trip. Connie and Hugh Sykes manage this store for Burgiss. The Sykes, who previously owned Ye Olde Mantel Antiques in Mooresville, enjoy running a shop that reflects one of their passions: good vino. Hugh says his taste buds became refined in the late 1960s, while serving in the Army security agency in Germany. “There, I was introduced to wonderful beers and wine; it was an economic issue because we couldn’t afford the soft drinks,” he says. “Beer and wine were cheaper. I acquired a taste for really good wine.” The Sykes import the grape juices from around the world, including France, Italy, Spain, Argentina, Germany, Washington and the Sonoma area of California, and use them make the wine at the winery in Laurel Springs, with all the varietals covered. In addition to bottles of wine, Thistle Meadow Wines also sells a variety of gifts, including hand lotions, soaps and even earrings. There are also wine-themed decanters and home accessories available. Kitchen towels and cocktail napkins echo popular sentiments like: “If you don’t like the food, have more wine” or “We serve only the finest vintage wines, did you bring any?” The Sykes are happy to manage this latest venture in downtown Mooresville for Burgiss, and they like to greet everyone who walks through the door. They hope you’ll stop by to sit and sip for a spell.
