Launched as a collaborative effort between the Davidson Garden Club and Davidson College faculty members in 1984, the annual Davidson Horticulture Symposium draws people from all over the U.S. Now in its 29th year, the symposium features experts in horticulture, landscape design and botany and is a great opportunity to gets tips and advice from the pros on ways to beautify your own garden. This year’s symposium focuses on how to creatively make the most out of the space you have. Below are the top not-to-be-missed presentations.
Garden Designers at Home: The Private Spaces of the World’s Leading Designers Dr. Noel Kingsbury, an associate in the Department of Landscape at the University of Sheffield in the UK and author of more than 20 gardening books, leads this program that looks at what professional garden and landscape designers have in their own backyards. Kingsbury will provide a sneak peek into some of these private gardens, which are often used as sites for experimentation, either with untried plants, novel construction techniques or innovative ways of handling space.
Creating Contemplative Gardens Award-winning landscape designer and author Julie Moir Messervy leads this program about how to create a “Home Outside” that encourages thoughtful introspection and spiritual awakening. Via an interactive presentation, Messervy shares her secrets to crafting soothing retreats where you can escape the stresses of the world.
Terrariums and You Learn to create your own little enclosed garden and ecosystem in this workshop led by Tovah Martin, author of “The New Terrarium” and “The Unexpected Houseplant.” Martin will illustrate how you can use inexpensive materials like recycled vases and cake stands to serve as terrarium containers and enliven any décor with a little beauty and botany.
The Beautiful Edible Landscape Nan K. Chase, author of “Eat Your Yard!” leads this workshop about how to integrate Southern flowers, fruit and vegetables into a whole that is pleasing to the eye as well as tasty to the palate. Armed with this knowledge, your backyard retreat can serve as both a showcase for beautiful flowers and contain all the ingredients for a delicious salad.
