One of the fun perks of my job is having the occasional chance to meet celebrities. There’s a thrill that comes from interviewing someone you’ve seen on the big screen—or the cover of a tabloid. But to me there’s a person this job allows me to interact with who is often much more interesting:The visionary.
These are the people who bring a certain ambitious spark. Sure, they also have talent and ideas, and they’re willing to put in the hard work. But there’s something else. When you speak with these people, you can’t help but be inspired because you can sense they will almost certainly create positive change.
For this month’s cover feature, Women to Watch, we tracked down nine young women in this city with that spark. From a local philanthropist determined to offer better education to Tanzanian orphans to a stylist set on creating front row fashion events in Charlotte, these are women who are already making a difference. But, as the title says, they’re also women to keep an eye on because with this kind of drive (and dreams), we’re certain you haven’t seen the last of them.
And speaking of things to watch, Charlotte’s style scene is fast-growing and this month we cover it throughout the issue. Check out the looks on each of the featured women, who were all dressed by local shops. Also, take a peek at the lineup of upcoming new stores on page 23, and read writer Alison Henry’s interview with two local guys creating luxury menswear with Southern twist (page 64).
If you’re like me, this is the kind of issue that will leave you motivated and craving the opportunity to create. So do it, because Charlotte could always use more visionaries. And we’re always looking for more inspiring people to feature.
