Break out your mid-calf socks, Charlotte—the Major League Lacrosse All-Star Game is hitting the town July 13 (7 pm, American Legion Memorial Stadium). Hosted by the city’s own pro lax team, the Charlotte Hounds, the game features the best stick wielding players in the world. Hounds’ president Jim McPhilliamy says holding the game in Charlotte is symbolic of the city fast path to becoming the sport’s Southeastern hub, “ Not Atlanta, not Nashville— Charlotte.” Buy your tickets at www.charlottehounds.com, and read up on our favorite players and where to go before and after the game below.
Hit HoundsThese three players are on top their game both on and off the field.
Matt Danowski An integral part of the Charlotte Hounds’ offense, Matt Danowski is ranked 6th overall in the MLL as an attackman. When he’s not scoring for the Hounds, Danowski can be found at his alma matter, Duke University, coaching the men’s lacrosse team alongside his father, head coach, John Danowski.
Ryan Flanagan The host of this year’s Youth All-Star Tournament, Ryan Flanagan is a defenseman for the Hounds and one of the team’s MVPs. When he’s not on the field, Flanagan is a trading analyst for Bank of America—and an ESPNU commentator. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill grad also recently launched Team 24/7 Lacrosse, a non-profit that shapes young athletes on and off the field.
Jovan Miller Jovan Miller, Hounds’ midfielder, is a true talent and fan favorite. Not only were two of his goals named SportsCenter Top 10 Plays in 2012, but this Hound also played in the 2012 All-Star Game. Miller is also an assistant coach to the Queens University lacrosse team.
