When Brian Conti’s recent Kickstarter.com project, a bottle opener attached to a wine cork, failed to meet its monetary goal, the Charlotte designer simply amended the design. “It didn’t translate well online,” says Conti, who has found success on the site for pencil and magnet designs. “A lot of people said that they liked the design of the opener, but didn’t feel the need for the other part.” Undeterred, Conti launched a new project in August for Strong Like Bull Bottle Opener, a custom designed aluminum opener created in local Charlotte machine shops. And the designer, who plans to sell the openers for $35, is hopeful. “We launched on a Friday and had 40 percent of the funding by Monday,” says Conti, whose day job is designing security devices. “Kickstarter has been great for me with this hobby. As long as I have ideas that pop into my head, I’ll keep trying them there.” To check out other local Charlotte projects, visit www.kickstarter.com/discover/places/charlotte-nc.
