A New Gin-eration

Rather than bask in the success of their award-winning debut liquor, Cardinal Gin, brothers Alex and Charlie Mauney, owner/operators of Southern Artisan Spirits, have kept busy in their Kings Mountain distillery crafting a second and mighty innovative elixir: barrel-aged gin. By stealing a page from the brown-spirits playbook and allowing the gin to rest in a barrel, they Mauneys introduce a mellow flavor, without sacrificing the mint and juniper notes for which their Cardinal Gin is known. “It tastes like gin, but with a whiskey flavor,” says Alex, “We’ve been drinking it straight, but it also tastes real good mixed with Cheerwine.” The gin retails for $34 and will be available in North Carolina liquors in October.
