Observer's features section again among the nation's best

By Michael Weinstein
Features Editor

The Observer has been named one of the top 10 features sections in the country - for the third straight year.

The American Association of Sunday and Feature Editors honors sections that present lifestyle and arts and entertainment coverage with authority, utility, energy and wit. Judges look for strong local content, service to readers and presentation.

"The Charlotte Observer's sections have a good sense of community and cover a good range of topics from fashion to local arts to food," the judges said. "Several of the features include online elements including online slide shows and videos. The writing is fresh and the section design is solid. The inside pages are nicely organized and inviting."

We submitted sections from the week of Nov. 3, 2008. That week included coverage you might recall: Cristina Bolling's story on binge drinking, Kathleen Purvis on organizing recipes, Rachel Sutherland on accessories, Amy Baldwin on children's pop-up books, Helen Schwab's CLT story "Around the world in 35 plates," John Bordsen on New Orleans music and Steven Brown and Gary O'Brien's "All-Stars of the Arts."

Elizabeth Leland received an honorable mention for general feature writing for her 2008 story "Give the man a hand," about a man in Cornelius who waves at passing cars.
