As the (weather) worm turns

The Woolly Worm Festival, the time-honored Banner Elk festival that merges folk meteorology and racing, will feature 160 food or craft vendors, entertainers and other fun in addition to the woolly worm races. Get your caterpillar registered ($5), and if he/she is fast enough, you could win $1,000 that Saturday or $500 on Sunday. There will be elimination heats both days. The Saturday champ also is deemed the woolly worm whose outward appearance will “forecast” the coming winter’s weather in the High Country. The “woolly worm” (known elsewhere as the “banded woolly bear”) is the larva that changes into the Isabella tiger moth when spring arrives. Details/tickets: www.woollyworm.com.
