Mount Pleasant

Mount Pleasant is a historic town with its own downtown, attractions and charm. The holiday season is a good time to see these attributes for yourself.

Mount Pleasant (www.townofmountpleasant.com) isn’t simply the Charleston suburb holding up the eastern end of the Cooper River bridge. It’s a historic town with its own downtown, attractions and charm. The holiday season is a good time to see this for yourself.

The Holiday Farmers Market & Craft Show (Dec. 7) is held at the Farmers Market Pavilion at Coleman Boulevard and Simmons Street. You’ll find the expected locally grown produce and preserves, but also handcrafted items by local artisans that range from glassware to original art. Live entertainment that day has a holiday accent, and market/show admission and activities for kids are free.

The community Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony starts around 5:45 p.m. Dec. 8 at Moultrie Middle School and includes fireworks. The Christmas Light Parade, which follows it, starts at Shem Creek and draws thousands of spectators to Coleman Boulevard to see more than 100 floats.

Mount Pleasant is home to up-and-coming Westbrook Brewing (www.westbrookbrewing.com), which makes three beers year round, has 21 other varieties in rotation, and sports a tasting room and brewery tours. Drop in at 510 Ridge Road for a brew, and check out the funky-cool labels, which (holiday shopper alert) grace their cans, bottles and koozies.

If you’re going to end the year in the area, you may want to plan ahead to attend Yorktown Countdown at Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum. New Year Eve aboard the USS Yorktown was a military matter from 1943 (the aircraft carrier was fighting the Japanese in the Pacific theater) to the mid-1970s, when the venerable “Fighting Lady” was decommissioned and towed to Charleston to become the centerpiece at Patriots Point. The popular ship is staging the New Year’s Eve countdown event from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. Tickets are limited to 1,500. Details/tickets: www.yorktowncountdown.com.
