Joe Miller is the author of “Adventure Carolinas: Your Go-To Guide for Multi-Sport Outdoor Recreation,” to be published in May (UNC Press; $45 hardcover, $20 paperback). We asked him to pick his favorite Piedmont destinations.
U.S. National Whitewater Center. “The Charlotte complex offers around 20 activities, and keeps adding more. Everything you’d like to do, you can sample here ( www.usnwc.org), from climbing to paddleboarding. This is a great place to try everything the two-state area has for outdoor adventure.”
Pilot Mountain State Park. “Rock climbing is the great thing here ( http://1.usa.gov/1o6NxDL), including a lot of top-roping, which makes this sport accessible to new climbers. There’s a good variety of routes, and people come here from throughout the Carolinas and from Virginia.”
Forks Area Trail System (FATS) in Sumter National Forest. “This is probably one of the top mountain biking destinations in the Piedmont: It’s in southwest South Carolina, north of North August ( http://1.usa.gov/N4w6Zd). There are 37 miles of trails for mountain biking, and there’s a good mix of beginner, intermediate and advanced trails.”
