Two people were killed in a head-on collision that blocked traffic at Pineville-Matthews and Johnston roads in South Charlotte for hours Wednesday afternoon.
Police identified the dead as Ralph Edward Herrick, who turned 71 two weeks ago, and Henry Clark Holliday, 48.
According to police, Herrick was headed eastbound on Pineville-Matthews Road around 3:30 p.m. when his 2005 Kia Optima suddenly veered into the westbound lane, colliding with Holliday's 1989 Toyota Camry.
Both men died at the scene. A passenger in Holliday's car was taken to the hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries, though authorities have not released that person's name.
Police are still investigating the wreck, and it was still unclear what caused Herrick's car to swerve. WCNC-TV, the Observer's news partner reported that Herrick may have had some sort of medical emergency.
