KANNAPOLIS Thanks to a $1million grant, students from as many as eight state universities will study food science and nutrition at the North Carolina Research Campus in Kannapolis.
The grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture will expose graduate students to what is known as a transdisciplinary approach to solving problems, said Jack Odle, a nutritional biochemistry professor at N.C. State University. Odle led the effort for the grant and will direct the program.
Students will be known as Kannapolis Scholars. Each will receive about $38,000 over 15 months to cover tuition, housing and other expenses, Odle said.
Participating institutions are Appalachian State, Duke, N.C. A&T State, N.C. Central and N.C. State universities and UNC Charlotte, UNC Chapel Hill and UNC Greensboro.
