A construction worker at an uptown condominium project fell more than five stories Saturday morning and was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The worker fell around 8:15 a.m. at the future site of the Vue condominiums located at Fifth and Pine streets. The worker's name wasn't released and authorities had no update on his condition late Saturday. Officials with the N.C. Department of Labor, which investigates industrial incidents, did not return calls seeking comment.

Richard Cagan, regional safety director for R.J. Griffin Construction, the injured worker's employer, said the company is investigating but has not determined the cause of the fall at what will be a 51-story, 409-unit building.

Cagan said that Saturday's fall was the first serious injury that he could recall at that construction site.

The Vue sits on 1.5 acres across from the uptown Harris Teeter. The prices of the condos range from more than $200,000 to $4 million.
