CMS changes boundaries

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Board has approved a series of new boundaries, paving the way for six new schools to open next August and another new school the following year.

The new schools are in the north, west and southwest parts of Mecklenburg County.

CMS held a series of community meetings in recent months about the boundary changes.

The boundary lines can be seen at the CMS Web site -- www.cms.k12.nc.us/departments/studentPlanning/maps09-10/2009-10BoundaryOptions.asp.

The new schools, and the areas they will affect (these schools open next August, except where noted):

Belmeade Road Middle: This west Mecklenburg school will take students from Coulwood, Kennedy, Sedgefield and Wilson middle schools.

Dixie River Road Elementary: Berryhill and Steele Creek elementary schools will benefit from the opening of this school.

Mount Holly-Huntersville Road Elementary: This school, in west Mecklenburg, will ease overcrowding at Mountain Island and Paw Creek elementary schools.

Ridge Road Middle: In north Charlotte, this school will help alleviate crowding at Alexander Middle and will accommodate future growth in the area.

Salome Church Road Elementary: This school, off North Tryon Street near Interstate 485, will ease overcrowding at University Meadows, Newell and Hidden Valley elementary schools.

Youngblood Road/Steele Creek Road Elementary: One of two southwest Mecklenburg schools designed to alleviate overcrowding at Lake Wylie and Winget Park elementary schools.

York Road/Fez Club Road Elementary: This is the other southwest Mecklenburg school aimed at dealing with the Lake Wylie/Winget Park issues. This school will not open until the 2010-2011 school year.

The board also made changes in the boundaries for Olympic and West Mecklenburg high schools, so they are consistent with the lines for the new Dixie River Road Elementary.
