Rain causes morning traffic troubles

Traffic is returning to normal in the Charlotte area, but rainfall caused plenty of problems for morning commuters.

More of the same is possible on the way home, with even heavier rain expected to reach the region by late this afternoon or this evening.

Eric Morrison, a spokesman for Medic, the county's emergency medical service agency, said crews responded to 11 injury wrecks between midnight and 10 a.m. Morrison said two wrecks involved overturned vehicles, including one on Interstate 85 during the morning commute.

A wreck before daybreak this morning on inbound East Independence Boulevard snarled traffic on that road for almost 90 minutes.

The Independence collision happened in the right lane near the Briar Creek interchange. Three vehicles were involved, and while the wreck did not cause major damage, it made a mess of traffic. The vehicles were moved to the side of the road before 7 a.m., but slow traffic remained a problem until about 8 a.m.

And a serious wreck halted traffic on N.C. 218 at the Mecklenburg-Union County line.

Authorities in Mecklenburg and Union counties say the wreck was on N.C. 218 at Rock Hill Church Road. Police closed both lanes of N.C. 218 for about an hour while they cleared the wreckage, but the road is open again.
