String of west-side fires set

By Steve Lyttle

A string of small fires was set in west Charlotte overnight, and police believe it was the work of a pedestrian, apparently setting the blazes as he or she walked along.

It marked at least the second time this week that a series of fires was set in the west Charlotte area. Police are not saying if they think the fires are the work of the same person.

According to police, the overnight fires were set around midnight. At least four blazes were reported -- at West Boulevard and Spruce Street; West Boulevard and Clanton Road; on Hemphill Avenue at Morehead Street; and on Old Steele Creek Road.

Most of the blazes were small brush fires which did not cause damage. One blaze damaged a roll-out trash container.

Police say they think the person responsible for the fires lit them while walking a route along West Boulevard, Hemphill and then Old Steele Creek Road.

Early Monday morning, a series of fires was reported in the same area. A vacant house was damaged in one of those blazes.
